Kim Petras' New EP Deserves To Be On Your Scary Halloween Music Playlist

Every year we tend to get a handful of spooky new tunes to add to our Halloween playlist from an array of genres and the pop's contribution to the 2018 installment comes courtesy of Kim Petras. At the top of October, the budding pop star released a new Halloween-themed mixtape called Turn Off the Light, Vol. 1. and it's worthy of a listen.

While your Halloween playlist is probably packed with classics like Michael Jackson's "Thriller," Nina Simone's "I Put A Spell On You" and Danny Elfman's theatrical tunes from Beetlejuice, Petras' new set has a few notable cuts that fall right in between the mystifying and the sing-a-longs. Unlike her own soaring pop, the eight-track set sees her dive into the spooky realm of heavy synth, theatrics and dark lyrics, and it's worthy of a listen.

While the intro track, "o m e n," serves as an instrumental only cut, the build-up feels classic. "It's very inspired by the soundtrack of Halloween...[it] puts you in the mood," she told Out. Meanwhile tracks like "Close Your Eyes" and her favorite "In The Next Life" bring forward the elements of evil that the pop star details in the lyrics. "Just a very theatrical, Freddy Mercury-inspired song about being in the next life and accepting that you're evil," she explained to the outlet of the latter. "[My character on the mixtape is] kind of a killer. I have my moments on this with remorse and feeling like 'what have I done?' The character for this one was definitely just evil Kim. It's just evil Kim attacking me and I can't stop her from coming through."

Scroll on below to listen to our highlights from Kim Petras' Halloween-themed mixtape, Turn Off the Light, Vol. 1. and keep your eyes peeled for performances of the cuts during the singer's opening set for Troye Sivan's ongoing tour.
