We're Willing To Pay More For Wine With A Cork?

Screw cap wines have come a long way over the years, but it turns out we still get judgy about bottles thatdon’thave corks. Many wines have screw caps now, but according to a new study in the Journal of Wine Economics, Americans still believe a cork is betterand they’re willing to pay more to get one.

Researchers from Montana State University analyzed grocery store sales data from over a million wine purchases in 10 large U.S. markets and figured out that we’re willing to pay about $1 more for a bottle with a cork.

The study only looked at wines under $30 because people buying wine in this range may actually use how the bottle is sealed as part of their decision-making process. If you’re splurging on a $100 bottle, you probably won’t change your mind if it has a screw cap. And since we know people are cork snobs, bringing a bottle with a cork to a dinner party will impress people more because they associate corks with better wine.
