Recap American Idol’s Top 3 Performances

American Idol’s top three contestants Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Gabby Barrett and Maddie Poppe gave it their all during Sunday’s May 20 two-part finale episode. The top three contestants each performed three songs and gave fans a glimpse into their lives back at home during hometown visits ahead of tonight’s live finale.

Caleb Lee Hutchinson performed his new single “Johnny Cash Heart,” which was written by Jay DeMascus of Rascal Flatts. Although Katy Perry told Caleb it was his weakest performance to date, Luke Bryan reminded him he’s now part of the music biz. He also gave a rendition of Keith Whitley’s “Don’t Close Your Eyes” and “Folsom Prison Blues.”

Gabby performed her single “Rivers Deep,” Miranda Lambert’s “Little Red Wagon” and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing.” Former Journey frontman Steve Perry gave her the seal of approval from the audience, revealing it was one of the most amazing versions of the song he’s ever heard.

Maddie Poppe partnered up with “Issues” singer and fellow Iowa native Julia Michaels for new single “Going Going Gone.” She also performed original song “Don’t Ever Let Your Children Grow Up” and Fleetwood Mac’s ballad “Landslide.”

In an unofficial overnight poll, Gabby is predicted to win the season with 51% of viewers while Maddie received 36% and Hutchinson a 13% of the total tally.
