Nutritionist Shares How to Detox Your Body From California Wildfire Smoke

As the devastating California wildfires continue to burn, new concerns have arose surrounding breathing in toxic smoke. Ryan Seacrest sought out the advice of nutritionist Kristy with KM Sports Nutrition to share how we can easily detoxify our bodies at home.

“The first thing is drinking enough water,” Kristy shared on-air on Thursday, November 15. “I think we under estimate how much water we need at this time. Most people think 8 to 10 cups of water a day, but you really need 10 to 12 or more, so constantly, constantly drinking water throughout the day is No. 1.”

There’s also a lot of herbs that can help detoxify, Kristy explained.

“You want thyme, you want ginger, and turmeric is really helpful too, but I would say thyme and ginger are easily the most accessible,” she added. “Those you can put in any of your foods, but the most effective, even for kids … [is to boil them].”

To do so, Kristy explained, take the thyme and ginger and boil them in a pot of water. Place a towel over the top of the pot and carefully breathe in the herb-filled steam.

“Breathing into that for 1 to 3 minutes … even if you are out in polluted air, but most importantly with these wildfires, you can really almost feel an opening in your lungs if you do that,” Kristy continued. “… They’re antiviral and antifungal. They really work as a natural detoxifier.”

See below for more tips from Kristy and listen back to the audio above:

1. Drink LOTS of water. Now more then ever it’s important to hydrate. Smoke inhalation causes microscopic particles to get trapped in your lungs and can even get into your bloodstream. Water can flush out these particles. Increase to at least 12-14 8 oz. glasses

2. Breathing in a stream of thyme and other herbs. Doing this can help remove foreign substances, clear passages and reduce irritation in your sinuses. Combine 1-2 table spoons of thyme in a large bowl of boiling water and cover with a large towel, trapping the steam under the towel. Breath deeply for 1-3 minutes.

3. Increase your vitamin C daily. Vitamin C is a natural immune system booster which can help your body to detox.

4. Load up on ginger. Ginger is another natural detoxifier. You can also steep ginger the same way as thyme, or make hot ginger tea or add fresh ginger to your food. Ginger contains a chemical compound that helps the lungs function and improves blood circulation.

5. Use a saline nasal spray. Harmful particles can get trapped in your nose. A great way to alleviate the harmful particles that are caught and moisten and smooth the inside of your nose.

*You can also steep slippery elm, marshmallow root, eucalyptus and peppermint, all herbs that help clear out lungs
